A complete step-by-step masterclass on traditional Ayurvedic champi (head massage). Learn the right pressure points, temperature, and duration for healthy, thriving hair.
In Ayurveda, the practice of Shiroabhyanga — colloquially known as 'Champi' — is considered far more than a beauty treatment. It is a restorative health ritual that harmonizes the Vata and Pitta doshas, relieves tension accumulated in the sensory organs, and floods hair roots with vital botanical nourishment.
Step 1: Prep and detangle first
Never apply oil to tangled, knotted hair. Use a wide-tooth neem wood comb or your fingers to gently detangle from ends upward toward the roots. Detangling prior to oiling prevents tugging and mechanical breakage when distributing oil across the scalp.
Step 2: Warm the oil gently
Warmth enhances oil viscosity and enables deeper trans-epidermal penetration. Pour 10 to 15 ml of botanical hair oil (such as iSkinist Root Recovery Hair Oil) into a small bowl and place it in warm water for 2 minutes. Never microwave pure herbal oils, as excessive heat can denature delicate botanical compounds like Vitamin E and essential fatty acids.
Step 3: Section and apply with finger pads
Part your hair into clean sections. Dip your finger pads — never fingernails — into the warm oil and apply it directly along the scalp partings. Focus on the crown (Adhipati marma), temples (Shankha marma), and the occipital hollow at the base of the skull.
Step 4: The circular massage rhythm
Apply slow, rhythmic circular motions for 5 to 7 minutes. Use firm, comforting pressure that moves the scalp skin over the skull rather than rubbing hair shafts against one another. This stimulates micro-capillary dilation without creating friction or frizz.
“The comb should glide through oiled hair like silk. Regular oiling helps reduce friction and keeps strands flexible.”

Step 5: Duration and wash off
Leave the oil on for at least 1 hour, or overnight for deep restoration. Wrap hair in a warm, damp towel for 10 minutes prior to washing to open the cuticles and maximize absorption. Wash with a mild, botanical shampoo.
